Well, it seems Nio did it again. They produced a 150kWh car battery with 1000km range, which their CEO actually tested himself to prove their claims.

Who are Nio?

Think of Nio as the equivalent of Tesla in the Asian world, only better. Elon will have a lot of competition from these people.

We first mentioned Nio in our article about EV battery-swapping. They are a Chinese multinational electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer that specializes in designing, developing and producing electric vehicles and related technologies. The company’s headquarters are in Shanghai, China and was founded in November 2014 by William Li (also known as Li Bin).

Their sales keep rising every year and many specialists in the electric vehicle world believe that because of their rapid improvements in the battery production research, they will soon become number 1 EV manufacturer on the planet.

The 1000km range battery

William Li, Nio’s CEO, did a live stream of himself driving their ET7 model equipped with their new 150kWh battery, between two Chinese cities. Here’s what he posted on weibo (a Chinese version of Twitter):

After 14 hours of hard work, the 150kWh battery life test reached a final range of 1044 kilometers with 3% power left!

There has been a nationwide cold wave in recent days. When we set off from the Shanghai World Expo Center battery swap station at 6:32 in the morning, the temperature was minus 2 degrees. The team did not expect the actual battery life to exceed 1,000 kilometers today. Beyond everyone’s expectations, the ET7 and 150kWh battery performed almost perfectly! We set off from Shanghai at 6:32 in the morning, passed through Cicheng, Taizhou, Cangnan, Fu’an, Lianjiang, and Puli service areas, and finally arrived at Longjudong service area in Xiamen City, Fujian Province at 20:33 in the evening. The total journey was 1,044 kilometers and there was still 3% remaining power when parking.

The completion of this endurance challenge proves the strong product power of the 150kWh ultra-long endurance battery pack. This battery is currently the battery pack with the highest energy density in mass production in the world and has excellent safety performance. More importantly, all models on sale can be flexibly upgraded to 150kWh batteries through the NIO battery swap system.

150kWh car battery? I want one of these!

Well, you’ll then need 3 things:

First of all, patience, as Nio are starting their mass production in April 2024.

Secondly, you’ll need to have a Nio car, as these batteries will only be available for their own models.

And third, you’ll need to have a spare $42,100 (or £33,300 or €38.500) to pay for it! Too much? No problem! Nio will add this battery to their battery-swapping stations, and since they offer the option of buying their car without a battery (which drops the initial purchase cost), we foresee many people will be choosing that option instead!
